South Saskatchewan Regiment

This site is the property of the South Saskatchewan Regiment Association.

It is the product of many years of volunteer effort, especially the contributions of SSR soldiers and their families, and work by Estevan Public Library staff in the digitization of the book The March of the Prairie Men. This site contains the war diary, nominal rolls, photo gallery, testimonials by or about SSR soldiers and their families, SSR news, and information about researching family history involving soldiers, in the links section.

The original inspiration for this web site was the digitization of the book The March of the Prairie Men. Once digitized and on the Internet, South Saskatchewan Regiment(SSR) veterans began communicating with the webmaster, submitting content about the SSR. This additional content grew into a volume of material greater than the book and the SSR web site was born. Now The March of the Prairie Men forms just a part of this site.

This site honours Sgt. PT Maule, Capt. Cec Law, Bill Sutherland, veterans of the SSR, who worked regularly with the webmaster over several years, and all other soldiers of the SSR and their families.

A life membership in the South Saskatchewan Regiment Association and plaque was granted to Greg Salmers by the Association on 15Sep2001 in recognition of his previous and ongoing work with SSR veterans and their families to create and sustain this website. While not a veteran of the South Saskatchewan Regiment, Greg Salmers is a veteran of a sister regiment, the Saskatchewan Dragoons. As time passed, Cec Law wrote in a letter of 17Dec2009, that Mr. Salmers is "now the closest thing to an SSR veteran that we have...you know as much as anyone now, about the SSR history." In 2022, the Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Saskatchewan conferred upon Mr. Salmers the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in recognition of his efforts such as this web site and its educational value.

Therein lies an elevated sense of duty beyond mere updating of web pages.

Suggestions, additional content, and comments are all welcome and essential, and may be sent to: SSR Webmaster Greg Salmers

This is a soldier's history of these times, not an historian's. It endeavours above all to capture the experiences of these soldiers before, during, and after war.
